If your house is built around Alexa, I would stop overthinking this: pick Amazon Music Unlimited. If your house is a patchwork of Sonos, WiiM, AirPlay, Google Cast, and people with their own phones, Spotify is usually the less annoying choice.

That is not a verdict on playlists or celebrity podcasts. Whole house audio makes the service part of the plumbing. The useful question is whether music starts in the kitchen, joins the office, survives a handoff from one person’s phone to another, and keeps working after someone buys a different speaker next year. The short answer by system

Amazon Music Unlimited has the home field advantage with Echo speakers and Alexa multi-room groups. Amazon’s current Music Unlimited page advertises 100 million songs without ads. Amazon says Music Unlimited includes 100 million HD songs and millions in Ultra HD. Eligible Individual subscribers and Family plan account holders can access one audiobook at a time each month, rather than owning a monthly Audible title. That package makes sense when the speakers, voice assistant, and music subscription all belong to Amazon.

Spotify is the better default for a mixed system because Spotify Connect puts compatible playback devices inside the app. Your phone becomes a remote, not a fragile audio cable. That matters when a WiiM streamer is feeding passive speakers in one room, Sonos lives in another, and somebody wants to use AirPlay from an iPhone later. Spotify does not magically synchronize competing ecosystems, but it gives more households a familiar control surface.

Neither service replaces the multi-room system. Sonos grouping is Sonos grouping. WiiM grouping is WiiM grouping. AirPlay 2 and Google Cast have their own rules. Pick the system that owns synchronized playback, then choose the service that reaches it cleanly. That distinction saves a lot of bad purchases.

Current plans and what a household actually gets

Pricing only matters after you know how many people need independent listening. Spotify’s current US Premium page lists Premium Individual at $12.99 per month and Family at $21.99 per month for up to six Premium or Kids accounts in one household. Amazon’s Music Unlimited Family plan is currently $21.99 per month plus tax after any trial. It supports up to six people listening at once, with personalized recommendations. Amazon’s Family plan help page says members can join with their own Amazon accounts, create playlists and libraries, and listen at the same time. Neither family plan is one shared music identity.

Amazon’s current Music Unlimited offering still needs a little more care. The plan page is the place to check current price, eligibility, and promotional terms. The useful product details are 100 million songs, ad-free playback, downloads, HD and Ultra HD availability, plus the qualifying audiobook access for an Individual subscriber or Family account holder. Do not choose it for the audiobook alone. Choose it because you have Echo rooms and want the shortest path from an Alexa request to music.

Spotify’s lossless support page lists playback up to 24 bit quality on compatible devices using Spotify Connect. That changes an old comparison point: Spotify can no longer be dismissed as automatically lower quality. Spotify also says lossless is unavailable for music videos, podcasts, and audiobooks, while compatible hardware still determines what each room receives. In a whole house, the weakest room and its protocol set the practical result.

Amazon advertises HD and Ultra HD, which is a stronger headline on paper. Yet whole house listening is rarely a format contest. A kitchen Echo, a compact speaker in a bathroom, and a grouped patio zone expose room noise and speaker limits before a codec becomes the problem. Echo and Alexa are Amazon Music Unlimited territory

Amazon has one advantage Spotify cannot copy: Alexa is Amazon’s own control plane. Amazon’s Alexa help page says you create a Multi Room Music group in the Alexa app, and it automatically creates an Everywhere group when more than one device is available. With Echo speakers, you can then ask Alexa to start music in a named room or group. Amazon Music Unlimited is the service built directly into that flow. You can still link Spotify to Alexa, but you are asking Amazon’s assistant to mediate another company’s service. It works, yet it adds a place where default services, account linking, and voice wording can get in the way.

For a house with Echo Dots in bedrooms and Echo speakers in the main rooms, the recommendation is blunt. Subscribe to Music Unlimited and use Alexa groups for casual all-house playback. This is the one setup where the provider and the speaker platform reinforce each other rather than merely tolerate each other.

Do not overread that recommendation. Echo multi-room is convenient background audio, not a route to a carefully tuned listening room. Amazon’s HD and Ultra HD catalog does not turn a small smart speaker into a full range system. If you want music to sound better, spend the hardware money on a proper amplifier, passive speakers, or a better powered speaker. The service choice comes second.

Amazon Music can also fit a Sonos or WiiM house, but the fit is different. Sonos lists Amazon Music as a supported music service, including Music Unlimited, HD, and Spatial Audio. The WiiM Amp overview lists Alexa Cast, AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, DLNA, and Roon Ready. Treat those as separate routes. A service being available in an app does not mean it will join every other brand’s synchronized group.

Spotify Connect is the practical mixed-system advantage

Spotify Connect is the reason Spotify keeps winning this kind of comparison. Spotify’s official Connect guide says it lets one device remotely control listening on another compatible device. In ordinary use, you select a compatible speaker or streamer in Spotify and the playback device takes the stream itself. The phone can leave the room, switch apps, or run low on battery without acting as the audio source.

That behavior is especially useful with streamers. A WiiM device connected to an amp can appear as a Spotify Connect target, while a Sonos room can stay inside the Sonos app or its own supported Spotify path. You are still working within each platform’s grouping limits, but Spotify is the service most family members already know how to aim at a device. There is less retraining, and fewer requests to find the one house-control app.

Spotify Connect lets the signed-in account control playback on a compatible target. A change of account can affect the same target differently by device, platform, and account state, so it is not a general cross-account handoff promise. In a household, treat the signed-in account and the speaker platform’s own controls as the reliable behavior.

Lossless needs one more warning here. Spotify’s official lossless guide says the device needs to support it, and it explicitly says not all third party devices do. Do not buy a streamer because a retailer description says Spotify Connect and assume the whole house will receive lossless. Check the maker’s current support page for the exact model, then ask whether every room needs that level of fidelity. Often it does not.

AirPlay, Google Cast, Sonos, and WiiM change the answer

AirPlay 2 and Google Cast are useful escape hatches, not substitutes for a coherent multi-room platform. If the household uses iPhones and compatible speakers, AirPlay 2 can get audio from an app into a group. Sonos confirms that its compatible products accept AirPlay 2. That can make either service feel more flexible, but it also makes the phone and Apple’s grouping controls part of the experience.

WiiM is where protocol breadth matters most. A WiiM Pro Plus or an Amp based room can make existing speakers useful again without forcing the household into a single branded speaker line. The WiiM Amp’s official protocol list includes Spotify Connect and Alexa Cast, along with AirPlay 2 and Google Cast. Amazon Music needs one of those WiiM-supported routes, and the route must match how the household will actually start playback.

Sonos sits in the middle. Its app has deep service integrations: Sonos lists Amazon Music and Sonos lists Spotify as supported services. Sonos also supports AirPlay 2 on compatible products. The service does not decide whether rooms stay synchronized, Sonos does. Spotify gains a small usability edge because the Spotify app can select compatible playback targets, while Amazon Music users are more likely to browse inside Sonos or use Alexa and AirPlay where appropriate.

Home Assistant does not settle this fight either. It can expose and automate many speaker systems, but service playback and grouping remain tied to the integration and hardware underneath. My recommendations by house

An Echo house: Choose Amazon Music Unlimited. The practical win is voice control plus Alexa multi-room groups, not a paper specification. You get Amazon’s 100 million-song HD catalog and millions of Ultra HD tracks, plus qualifying audiobook access in the same subscription. It also means asking for music in a room does not require teaching everyone which app owns the speakers.

A Sonos house: Choose Spotify unless Amazon Music is already the service everybody wants. Sonos supports both, so sound and group synchronization are not the deciding factors. Spotify is easier to hand around because its app and Connect model are familiar, while Sonos remains the place that owns rooms and groups. Amazon Music remains sensible if Alexa is the dominant controller or its catalog and audio tiers are a priority for the account holder.

A WiiM house with passive speakers: Choose Spotify for the least friction, then check the exact device’s current support before you assume a protocol. WiiM is attractive because it lets the streamer be a replaceable part of a better speaker system. Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, and Google Cast give a WiiM setup multiple on ramps. Amazon Music is a good choice only when you have confirmed the route you intend to use and that route matches how the household will actually start playback.

A mixed house: Choose Spotify. A mixed house needs one app people recognize and a service that appears on a broad range of compatible devices. You will still have islands, especially when a Sonos group and a WiiM group need to stay perfectly synchronized. Do not promise one tap across every brand. But Spotify minimizes the number of separate habits required to start music in the first place.

An audio quality first house: Call it a draw until you inspect the hardware. Amazon’s HD and Ultra HD claims and Spotify’s current lossless tier do not settle what comes out of your speakers. The streamer, speaker, network path, and group protocol matter. Buy the system that supports the quality setting you care about in the rooms where you sit down and listen. Everywhere else, reliable playback wins.

The Bottom Line

Amazon Music Unlimited is the right subscription for a home that runs on Echo speakers and Alexa groups. Amazon controls that path, and there is no prize for making it harder with a service that is merely compatible.

Spotify is the stronger general choice for Sonos, WiiM, and mixed whole house systems. Spotify Connect makes compatible devices feel like natural destinations in the app, and the app will already be familiar to many people in the house. Both services offer family plans with separate accounts, so that is not Spotify’s differentiator. Its current Premium plans also remove the old lossless objection, with the usual device support caveat.

I would not choose either service because of an audio format headline. Choose the one that reaches your existing rooms cleanly, then keep the speakers and grouping platform good enough that changing a subscription later does not wreck the house.
